About Acquire A Cappella

Acquire is the newest and fastest growing a cappella group on the UC Santa Cruz campus. The group only formed as recently as February of 2007, but in its first few months as a group, the group performed only material arranged by its members, performed many dates all over the UCSC campus, and in June hosted Acquirefest, the largest a cappella event on campus to take place in several years, bringing in six groups from all over northern California and yielding over 450 people. Since returning this past fall, the group has grown with new members and has traveled well outside Santa Cruz County and performed at several non-collegiate events, growing in statewide awareness and reputation. The group has quickly been establishing close relationships with over 15 collegiate, adult, and professional singing groups, as well as other industry professionals and venue promoters.

Twice a week the singers come together to learn, arrange, and perform the music they love. Each singer is engaged in some way with every facet of the group, freely exchanging ideas for the groups direction and therefore become individualized components in every events success.

Acquire started off the 2008 calendar year at legendary jazz location Kuumbwa on Saturday, January 12th. The group opened for Grammy nominated Blame Sally and the set received a standing ovation.

On February 1st and 2nd, an exact year from the group's initial formation, the choral group presented Disneymania, a full night of songs from classic Disney films sung a cappella. In attendance were the friends, family, and guests of both the university and the Santa Cruz community to enjoy a night of theatrical performance, complete with costumes and stage antics (a local rarity for an a cappella concert). All proceeds have gone towards the non-profit student organization to further develop musicianship and performances.

In the coming months, Acquire will host the second annual Acquirefest. This May 30th event will include some of the same six a cappella groups as well as some other new friends. Acquire also plans to travel to venues outside of California, and record a CD.
